Ephraem Syrus

Ephraem Syrus
(c. 306–73)
   Saint, Poet and Devotional Writer.
   Ephraem was born in Nisibis, Syria, and was ordained as a deacon. He is thought to have saved Nisibis from a Persian invasion, but, after 363, he moved to Edessa in the Roman Empire, which was a centre of Syriac Christianity. He was renowned for his ascetic life and, according to legend, he visited Egypt to argue with the Arians and went to Caesarea where he met St basil. He is remembered for his devotional writings, which included hymns, treatises against heretics, devotional manuals and biblical exegeses. In the Syriac Church, his hymns were very popular and he was known as the ‘lyre of the Holy Spirit’.
